Fiddle Your Way to Higher Ground

Fiddling to Higher Ground

  1. I’m pressing on the upward way,
    New heights I’m gaining every day;
    Still praying as I’m onward bound,
    “Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.”

    • Refrain:
      Lord, lift me up and let me stand,
      By faith, on Heaven’s tableland,
      A higher plane than I have found;
      Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.
  2. My heart has no desire to stay
    Where doubts arise and fears dismay;
    Though some may dwell where those abound,
    My prayer, my aim, is higher ground.
  3. I want to live above the world,
    Though Satan’s darts at me are hurled;
    For faith has caught the joyful sound,
    The song of saints on higher ground.
  4. I want to scale the utmost height
    And catch a gleam of glory bright;
    But still I’ll pray till heav’n I’ve found,
    “Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.”

Maybe I favor this tune, Higher Ground, because I follow Rob Cornish, an online marketing expert at his site Gain Higher Ground. And maybe it’s also a well known and loved Gospel song.

The repetition of the dotted rhythm in 3/4 gives you a good chance to get that rhythm solid and in the groove. It’s common enough in waltzes, too. This song, however, should not start sounding like a waltz unless you are playing it a bit too fast.

The A and B parts are not marked, but you can think of the first eight bars as the verse and the second eight bars as the chorus–A and B, in other words.

In the Chorus, or B part, the chord goes to a D7. That gives you the chance to show how well you can move your second finger from the low position to the higher, normal spot for that finger. Just like Old Joe Clark!

Also, see if you can give just a little vibrato to the dotted notes, especially the first finger on both the A string and the D string. As the song continues, the third finger gets a dot and can also have vibrato. For beginner to intermediates, the first finger is the best bet for adding a little color by vibrato.

And the printable pdf would be here.

If you look at the lyrics and compare them to what mystics say about the nature of the cosmos, that higher ground would be the inner planes, or higher planes. And the chorus says exactly that. A very interesting Gospel song.
